We may be going on 100 years since the start of the Prohibition, but vintage (and modern) speakeasies will forever hold a special place in our heart. Whether you sneak through a hidden entrance or pass along an illicit password, we’re pretty sure there’s no greater thrill than spending a memorable night in the know.
If you haven’t visited one for yourself, there’s no time like the present as we head into the next generation’s take on the roaring 20s. You can kick off the New Year by enjoying a cocktail or two at a few of our favorite speakeasies in the U.S. and Canada.
This secret spot is hidden in the popular restaurant, Neighborhood. Find the unsuspecting stack of kegs by the bathroom and push to transport yourself to a one-of-a-kind cocktail experience.
When you’re perusing the menu, don’t overlook the Fashionably Late made with bourbon, Licor 43 and ANGOSTURA® aromatic bitters
Tucked beneath the Fieldhouse Jones Hotel, this former storage space has been transformed into The Windy City’s best-kept secret. As a nod to the venue’s previous life, its walls are adorned with cleaning supplies and mops, but that’s just the start. The real draw is the creative cocktail menu, which offers interesting flavor pairings and unexpected twists.
Sneak through their “Employees Only” entrance and order yourself a Field’s Martini made with gin, dry okra vermouth and ANGOSTURA® bitters, and finished with a lemon twist garnish.
Moving bookshelves? You’ve got our attention. Dimly lit with limited seating, this secluded speakeasy in Denver is every cocktail connoisseur’s dream come true.
For the purist seeking something a little more exotic than a Manhattan, you can’t go wrong with the classic Pisco Sour, built with Barsol Pisco, fresh lime juice, sugar, egg white and ANGOSTURA®aromatic bitters.
Short for “Please Don’t Tell,” we couldn’t make a list of our favorite speakeasies without including this infamous (for all the right reasons) establishment. Whether it’s the elusive entrance – a nondescript phone booth on the bustling streets of NYC – or the killer cocktails crafted by praised mixologist, Jim Meehan, everything about PDT makes us want to tell everyone we know. But it’s OK, we know you can keep a secret.
Haircut or cocktail? At Cannibale, you can have both if you choose. Hidden behind a full-service barbershop, this local favorite serves bold looks and even bolder cocktails.
If you’re ready to really embrace this Canadian treasure, try The Toronto, made with Dark Horse Rye, Fernet Branca, demerara and ANGOSTURA® aromatic bitters.
Everything is not what it seems and this chic, pink champagne bar is no exception. While we do enjoy a classic champagne cocktail, it’s what this bar is hiding that really piqued our interest. If you decide to stop in, ask your server to take you on the champagne tour and you’ll be led to À Toi, a mysterious and vintage Paris-inspired speakeasy with a completely different look, energy and menu from what lives in the other part of the venue.
The cocktails at À Toi are as secretive as the speakeasy, itself (there’s no menu available online, nor are guests permitted to take photos), so you’ll just have to trust us on this one.
We’re pretty convinced it doesn’t get much better than this, but then again, we’re not typically one for playing favorites. With that in mind, we invite you to send your best speakeasy recommendations our way @angosturahouse and we may just share them with the world!
